Setup and common questions

What do I need to use Trill?

You need a Mac running Xirp and the Trill companion, plus a compatible iPhone or iPad. Both devices must be able to connect over a local network or a VPN such as Tailscale. Trill is still in development. Email me to ask about access and installing the companion.

How do I pair my computer?

Run the companion setup on your Mac, then choose Pair a computer → Scan pairing code in Trill. Review the computer before tapping Pair. You can paste a pairing link instead. Codes expire after ten minutes and can be used only once.

To create another code after setup, run:

trill pair
Why can't I open a terminal?

Setup starts with read-only access. Enable terminal and session control on your Mac:

trill control --enable

Enable control only for devices you trust. The session also needs a running terminal that Trill can connect to. Check Sessions → More → Connection details for connection status.

What if pairing or HTTPS fails?

Keep both devices on the same Wi-Fi or connected to the same configured VPN. Use the address generated by setup: a Bonjour .local hostname for LAN, or the full trusted Tailscale .ts.net hostname. A self-signed numeric-IP address may be rejected by iOS before certificate pinning. Create a fresh pairing code if the certificate or address changed.

Do not disable system security or send your pairing token to support.

Does disconnecting stop my work?

Disconnect closes Trill's connection and leaves the tmux session running on your Mac. To stop it, choose Stop session and confirm. When you return after iOS suspends Trill, the app tries to reconnect. If iOS has terminated the app, open the terminal again yourself.

Where do my photos and prompts go?

After you give permission, Trill uploads each photo you choose to private companion storage on your Mac. Closing the draft does not delete the photo. Your goal, terminal input, and files used by a coding agent may reach that agent's configured AI provider. Check the provider and its privacy settings on the Mac before sharing sensitive content. Read the privacy policy for retention and deletion details.

How do I revoke access or delete data?

Forget computer removes the primary pairing credential from this phone. Discard any unfinished pairing separately on the pairing screen. On your Mac, list and revoke registered devices:

trill devices
trill revoke DEVICE_ID

Delete uploaded images from ~/.local/share/trill/attachments or your configured attachment directory. Remove session history through Xirp or your terminal programs. Data already shared with an AI provider is subject to that provider's deletion controls. Uninstalling Trill does not stop remote sessions or delete their data.

How do I report a bug?

Email the app and OS versions, what you expected, what happened, and steps to reproduce it. A screenshot can help if you remove personal information first. If you share diagnostics, check them for secrets first and include only what is relevant.

Trill is an independent companion for Xirp and is not affiliated with Spotify.
